Ben Lawers

Ben Lawers Owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

Car park (NN575333), nature trail, mountain footpaths, visitor centre (open in the summer months). Boots, full waterproofs, map and compass are required for the higher paths.

Ben Lawers (1,214m) is the highest mountain in the central Highlands.

Terrain includes mountain grassland, alpine cliffs, newly planted native woodland and montane scrub. Amongst the many plants, bird and animal life to be seen are:

  • Alpine Lady's-mantle,
  • Moss Campion,
  • Purple Saxifrage,
  • Alpine Mouse-ear,
  • Bristle Sedge,
  • Alpine Woodsia and Alpine Forget-me-not;
  • Wheatear,
  • Skylark,
  • Meadow Pippit,
  • Curlew,
  • Twite,
  • Stonechat,
  • Ptarmigan,
  • Red Grouse and Golden Plover;
  • Red Deer,
  • Mountain Hare and the Common Lizard.
  • Butterflies include the Mountain Ringlet and Small Heath.
